Demolition on the historic Anniston Land Company Building began Monday despite several last-ditch efforts to save it. The building was declared a public nuisance and beyond repair by a city code officer. The streets surrounding the building were closed because the building was considered so unsafe after 10 years of neglect.

The city does have plans to save some of the ornamental architecture from the 123-year-old building.
