From the Talladega County Republican Party

All of the Talladega County GOP State Executive Committee Members attended a record breaking crowd at the Alabama State GOP Summer Dinner, held on Friday, August 12 at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Center.

Featured speaker was Gov. Rick Perry of Texas. More than 1500 attendees were at the event as Perry tried to not let the cat out of the bag about his bid for the GOP Presidency, of which he announced the next day in South Carolina. Meetings were held most of the day on Saturday as Alabama Governor Robert Bentley spoke to the Executive Committee Members, along with a rally that afternoon at the BJCC with Sen. Anniston crime lab's roof floods again

Anniston crime lab's roof floods again

Anniston Police are used to facing bad guys, that's why they carry guns. But nothing in their experience or training has prepared them for their biggest adversary these days: a leaky roof.

With rain becoming frequent this summer, the department has been forced to deal with the issue more often than usual, and more leaks mean more problems.

Ceiling tiles bow under the weight of water, and cracks are appearing in walls.  After Monday night's brief rainstorm, the crime lab had to be mopped up and a desktop computer keyboard had to be turned upside down to dry out.

Fortunately, police haven't reported any criminal evidence being compromised, but they say it's a struggle.

"We're not able to leave any evidence out, for any length of time, and we have to keep it locked up or put somewhere away from where the leaks are occurring, so that the evidence does not get compromised," says Anniston Police investigator Sgt. Fred Forsythe.

How does your county rank in quality of life?

How does your county rank in quality of life?

When it comes to assessing an entire county's quality of life, researchers must give scores and numbers to often intangible concepts such as security, happiness and success. The team of researchers at Alabama State University chose to focus on four areas of data collection: the economy, health, public safety and education.

The ASU team recently released their study called "Counties in Crisis," which compares all 67 Alabama states in each of those areas. Overall, Shelby County took the number one spot, followed by Madison, Baldwin, Jefferson and Limestone, respectively.

Mayor of Weaver arrested for third degree assault

Mayor of Weaver arrested for third degree assault

The mayor of Weaver, Garry Bearden, was arrested Tuesday evening for third degree assault for an incident that occurred June 30.  A man named Jeremy Bates claims that the mayor lunged toward him with his pickup truck and hit him in the arm with his truck's mirror.

The mayor says Bates was in the middle of the road and he swerved to keep from hitting him. The incident happened around 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 30.

Bearden was arrested Tuesday night by Weaver police. He is not listed as a current inmate on the Calhoun County jail's website. Third degree assault is considered a misdemeanor.

Bates, the man making the accusation of assault, was also arrested on Tuesday. Weaver police took him into custody for public intoxication.

Uncertain economy results in changes at Calhoun Chamber

The economy is tough all over.  But in Anniston it's so uncertain for so many reasons, Calhoun County's Chamber of Commerce has changed some job titles and descriptions.

Following a specially called board meeting Friday, Sherri Sumners, the longtime president of the chamber, will devote her time exclusively to several economic-related areas of interest, and will still represent the chamber at various functions.  The day to day operations of the chamber will be overseen by Linda Hearn, whose title is now manager.

Sumners said her main focus will be a $500,000 grant from the Department of Defense to help ease the transition as nearly 1,000 people will lose their jobs at the Anniston Army Depot's chemical weapons incinerator.  The incinerator is expected to process the last of the weapons before the end of the year, at which point its work will be complete.

Calhoun County courts to lay off half of employees Aug 1

Calhoun County courts to lay off half of employees Aug 1

Wednesday, Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Sue Bell Cobb stepped down in part due to the legislature's failure to treat the court system and its budget as a branch of government, rather than a state department. Shelby County courts have had to make cuts, and now Calhoun County is following suit and starting August 1, half of the courthouse's 25 employees will be laid off.
