Grants given to help victims of abuse in Ala.

From the Office of Governor Robert Bentley:

MONTGOMERY—Gov. Robert Bentley has awarded two grants totaling $32,002 to two nonprofit organizations that help meet the needs of victims of domestic violence and rape.

A $17,002 grant to the Alabama Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and a $15,000 grant to the Alabama Coalition Against Rape will help the agencies conduct training to help police, medical personnel and court staff identify the signs of domestic violence and rape.

“Helping victims of rape and domestic violence starts with being able to spot the signs of abuse,” Bentley said. “I commend both coalitions for their efforts to reduce the number of domestic violence and rape cases in our state and to aid those who have been victimized.”

Anniston councilor John Spain arrested again

Anniston City Councilman John Spain has been arrested again. This time, it's for violating the Council-Manager Act, according to Calhoun County Chief Deputy Matthew Wade. Spain apparently gave a direct order to an Anniston police captain while the Anniston police chief was out of town, which is illegal.

Spain is currently being held in the Calhoun County Jail.

Spain previously spent time in the Anniston City Jail following his arrest for getting into a fight with Anniston Mayor Gene Robinson in September. Spain was charged with third degree assault in October and is in the process of appealing that charge.
