OXFORD, AL (WBRC)- A sinkhole is not expected to delay the opening of the new Publix store in Oxford.

The sinkhole appeared this week on the grounds of a retail development called "Oxford Commons," located on Leon Smith Parkway at I-20.

The site was once part of the old antebellum "Davis Farm" and archaeologists say it was a Native American village before that.

A Publix spokesperson says the chain still expects to open their store by the end of February. The store is located several hundred feet from the sinkhole and it not believed to be threatened by it.

Panera Bread is also building a location slightly further away from the sinkhold. No word on when it will be filled in.
