JACKSONVILLE, AL (WBRC)- Jacksonville State University officials confirmed today that one of their students drowned over the weekend in Tennessee.
School officials have identified the student as Maucler Charles of Ouanaminthe, Haiti. He was a biology major at the school and just beginning his second year at the Daugette International House.
Charles was in Tennesse as part of a school trip that is a "longstanding tradition" for the International House program. According to the program director, Dr. John Ketterer, the students arrived at the Horns Creek Resort on the Ocoee River near Cleveland, Tenn. Saturday.
After taking part in some outdoor activities, Ketterer says that some of the students decided to cross a small pond by boat. The boat tipped, apparently dumping the students into the water. Ketterer says Charles didn't know how to swim.
