Family fun: Homemade gifts for Mother's Day

Family fun: Homemade gifts for Mother's Day

By Emelie Battaglia | Content provided by Ideal Home Garden

They always say it's the thought that counts, and on Mother's Day, that's especially true. But getting the little ones involved can oftentimes be challenging.

Lucky for you, we've put together a collection of Mother's Day crafts that are sure to leave Mom begging for more, and are perfect for getting children of all ages involved.

Pasta Heart Plate: Ages 4+

Keep it simple with a cute, fun project that's perfect for everyone. All you need is a colorful disposable plate (paper or coated), craft glue, dried macaroni noodles and yellow and green split peas. For younger children, dried beans work better, because they are larger and easier to grasp. Pick a color plate that you know Mom will like, found easily at any party store, and build from there.

Fred Hunter highlights the beauty and history of Alabama's 22 state parks in tonight's Absolutely Alabama segment.

If you're interested in geocaching and enjoy exploring, there's an Alabama State Parks Geocaching Challenge that kicks off this weekend at the Lakepoint Resort State Park in Eufaula. The challenge will take participants to all 22 state parks and across 1,300 miles.

"Each cache will be kid friendly and have a first finders prize," the website says. Those who complete the entire challenge will receive a trackable geocaching coin as a prize. Visit www.alapark.com or call 1-800-ALAPARK for details.

It's by no means comprehensive, so if you've got an Easter egg hunt you'd like to share, post the time, date and location on our Facebook page or send an email to web@wbrc.com.

St. Patrick’s Day crafts for kids

St. Patrick’s Day crafts for kids

You don't need to be Irish to celebrate the feast day of St. Patrick, the most well-known patron saint of Ireland. Born during the late-fourth century in Britain, Patrick was kidnapped as a teenager and sold into slavery in Ireland. He escaped and returned to his home, but later dreamt that he was to return to Ireland.

St. Patrick is believed to have died on March 17, 461. The day was proclaimed his feast day in the 1600s, but did not evolve into the largely secular celebration of Irish culture until Irish immigrants to the United States popularized their traditions in the 1900s. Today, St. Patrick's Day is one of the most widely celebrated saint's days in the world, celebrated even in Japan and South Korea.
