Escaped inmate captured in Calhoun County

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC)-

A female state inmate, reported as an escapee from the Birmingham area, has been arrested in Calhoun County.

The state department of corrections reported Michelle Marie Shannon missing from the Birmingham Community Facility around 4:48 a.m. Wednesday. She worked in the kitchen, and was serving a five year sentence in a theft and forgery case out of Huntsville.

Calhoun County Sheriff Larry Amerson says members of the Gulf Coast Fugitive Task Force—which included two of his investigators, two from Etowah County and even U.S. Marshals—began investigating a tip she may have been staying with an acquaintance in Calhoun County. When they went to check an area just off Highway 202, Amerson says they spotted a car in traffic that fit the description of a suspect vehicle.

When the car refused to stop, they followed it to Bynum Leatherwood Road near the Wellborn community, where Amerson said they executed a "rolling roadblock."

Want a cheap weekend vacation? Consider visiting a national park

Want a cheap weekend vacation? Consider visiting a national park

In part to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the National Park Service will be waiving admission fees at every one of their 397 parks Jan. 14-16.

National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis said in a press release, “Dr. King’s story and those of so many others whose efforts changed our country are preserved in the national parks, places where history happened. I hope every American can take advantage of the upcoming fee free weekend and visit their parks to experience their history firsthand.”

There are seven national parks in Alabama including the Horseshoe Bend National Military Park and the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site. As the park service points out, visiting one of the parks is also a great way to benefit your health with a hike or other outdoor activity.

Grants given to help victims of abuse in Ala.

From the Office of Governor Robert Bentley:

MONTGOMERY—Gov. Robert Bentley has awarded two grants totaling $32,002 to two nonprofit organizations that help meet the needs of victims of domestic violence and rape.

A $17,002 grant to the Alabama Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and a $15,000 grant to the Alabama Coalition Against Rape will help the agencies conduct training to help police, medical personnel and court staff identify the signs of domestic violence and rape.

“Helping victims of rape and domestic violence starts with being able to spot the signs of abuse,” Bentley said. “I commend both coalitions for their efforts to reduce the number of domestic violence and rape cases in our state and to aid those who have been victimized.”

Anniston welcomes new city councilor

ANNISTON, AL (WBRC)-

Anniston's city council is back to full capacity now after
a vote to replace departing council member John Spain.

At Tuesday's regular meeting, the remaining councilors voted
three to one to appoint a local architect ,Jay Jenkins, to fill Spain's unexpired
term representing Ward 1.  Jenkins was immediately sworn into office by
Calhoun County Circuit Judge Debra Jones. He then took his seat on the
council and heard his first order of business, an executive session on a
non-agenda item.

Jenkins is no stranger to city hall.

He's the chairman
of the planning commission, and has been a member for 17 years. Two of
his current projects are the city's planned judicial center—which would house
the police department and municipal court—and the city's aquatic center, which
is currently under construction at McClellan.
