Possible severe weather for the weekend

Possible severe weather for the weekend

I'm not a big fan of these type weather patterns.  They are challenging to forecast because you continue to see threat after threat for severe storms until the system eventually moves on through the area.  This is why we call it an unsettled pattern...makes sense, right?  It's the constant question of how much instability and how much wind shear.

Here's the setup.  We have a front that is approaching from the west.  The front will be the focus for rain and thunderstorms for the northern half of Alabama tonight.  If you live north of I-20 - you're at a better risk for seeing rain and thunderstorms tonight through tomorow morning.  I think this will mainly just be rainy weather.  I don't see anything overally impressive in regards to severe storms tonight.  You may see a few strong storms in Marion, Winston, Cullman, Bount, Etowah, and Cherokee Counties after 8pm.

A federal grant for $55 million will be divided between several tornado-impacted communities in Alabama, helping the state continue to recover from the devastating effects of last April's tornadoes.

  • City of Tuscaloosa will receive $16.634 million
  • Jefferson County will receive $6.386 million
  • City of Birmingham will receive $6.386 million

The remaining $24.14 million will be given to counties in Alabama that sustained damage from the tornadoes. Four target counties, DeKalb, Tuscaloosa, Marion and Jefferson counties, will receive the bulk of the remaining funds. The

The state is required to use 80 percent of the remaining money in the following four targeted counties: DeKalb, Tuscaloosa, Marion, and Jefferson.

At the start of 2010, ArLynn Presser from Winnetka, Illinois made a New Year's resolution to meet all of her Facebook friends before the year was out.

Having 325 friends on the social networking site meant that such a feat would be in the realm of possibility, though by no means easy. In fact, for 51-year-old ArLynn, it wouldn't be easy at all.

Suffering from agoraphobia, she had hardly been outside her home in 30 years. However, she was determined to take on the self-imposed challenge and travel the world to meet people she had only ever communicated with online.

Halfway through the year, she met Facebook friend 140, filmmaker Ben Gonzales. He immediately thought ArLynn's adventure would make a compelling documentary and proposed the idea to her. She agreed.

Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail celebrates 20 years with $20 golf rounds

Golf lovers, better put in your time off now! To help celebrate their 20th Anniversary, the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail will be offering a round of golf for $20 on the 20th of each month this year.

Players can make reservations a week out from the day online at each golf course's website. Alas, the deal isn't valid at Ross Bridge or Lakewood, and you'll have to pay extra for a golf cart. For more information about the ongoing celebration, check out http://www.rtjgolf.com/20/.

The golf trail is made of 11 public golf courses across the state. It's the brainchild of Dr. David Bronner, CEO of the Retirement Systems of Alabama who wanted a project that would boost tourism, attract retirees and boost economic growth in Alabama.
